Tournament of Minds 2017

As part of our enrichment programme, RBIS provides our highly-able students with the opportunity to participate in the international, problem-solving competition, Tournament of Minds, each year. Put into teams of seven, students are faced with two tasks from a choice of disciplines: a long-term challenge, which involves six weeks of rigorous preparation to eventually provide a solution to the challenge at the tournament itself, and a spontaneous challenge, which sees teams enter a judges room on tournament day where they are presented with a task they have no prior knowledge of. Both tasks are aimed at developing diverse skills, enterprise, time management, and the discipline to work collaboratively within a competitive environment. Ideas are formed and preparation is undertaken without overt influence from other agencies, which means the students are solely responsible for their ideas and solutions.

RBIS has been represented by teams in both Secondary and Primary over the last three years, with our students benefiting from the experience and the rich success they have achieved each year. Having won in 2015 and securing second in 2016, 2017 held much promise, and, once again, our students delivered with our Primary Language Literature team, The Comedic Commanders, grabbing second place in their heavily-contested category. This continued success is testament to the hardworking and creative students our school is blessed with.

Next year, the intention is to compete for honours again with the possibility of increasing our representation by sending four teams (two from our Primary phase and two from Secondary) thereby exposing more of our students to these highly-engaging enrichment opportunities. With their growing experience, hopefully, RBIS students can continue their winning streak and perhaps pave the way for a trip to represent Thailand in the final held in Australia in years to come!
